Yacht insurance is based on more than one thing. Most of the time if the yacht is
more than ten years old,the insurance company will want a survey to determine what
yacht is worth. The price of insurance will also be based on what type of material is
used to build the yacht.Yacht insurance is different than car insurance,it is broke
down to the different areas of the yacht. They will also want to know how much you
payed for the yacht.
The rates will also be based on how long you have been boating. You will get a small
discount if you have took a boating course from the Power Squadron. Most of the time
these courses are free. The insurance rates will be different for the different
areas of the yacht. There are four different areas.
The hull and all areas such frame work and the basic structure of the yacht is one
part. You will want to buy the type of hull which is best for the area where yacht
will be used. The insurance company will ask you where you plan to use the yacht.
They will also base the rate on this.
The second area of insurance will be insured based on the motors and power units in
the yacht. The more horse power the motors have, the higher the rate will be.There is
also a different rate for gas and diesel motors.A sailboat motor will be cheaper
than a power boat motor.
The third area of insurance will be the inside of the yacht. This will include
things such as a television and radios. This will also include a heater or a/c ,
refrigerator and stove. All beds and furniture will also be in this group.
The last area will be the liability part in case you hit another yacht or someone
may get hurt on your yacht. Most marinas or docks will want at least $300,000.00 .
If there are larger yachts where you dock, they may want as much as $500,000.00 .
This is not a lot of money if you hit a very large yacht.
