I am a skirt wearing guy and for the record, I am a happily married heterosexual male. I have worn skirts in public several times and am well qualified to offer my opinion on this matter.
I wear skirts for several reasons as follows:
1. They are comfortable. My preference is for a skirt that hangs about mid-ankle and one that is an A shape. That is, like the letter A. As such, the skirt does not hinder movement of my legs and is long enough to keep peeks up my skirt to a minimum. I am able to cross my legs guy style with this skirt and nothing is revealed.
2. They are cool underneath, not hot. In fact, much cooler than pants. Skirts are open at the bottom, not closed like pants. This permits ample airflow, especially on windy days! Of course, this depends on the style, if you get one that is very long, heavy and narrow then it can get warm on a summer day in the upper region. Naturally, one would want to pick a skirt appropriate for the season, eh?
3. Pants have a crease in them at the top where the two legs intersect. When sitting, this crease can pull up into the dangling bits and bind making them uncomfortable. Skirts don't have this problem.
4. I simply like the look from a fashion standpoint. I am not trying to mimic the look of a women, I wear men's shirts and sweaters with my skirts. I don't wear makeup or wigs or anything like that and I choose colors suitable for a man's wardrobe, for example, blue denim, browns, blacks, khaki and the like. The overall look as male and the only real difference is my bottom garment has one hole for the legs as opposed to two holes for the legs.
With respect to legs: I don't shave my legs, they are hairy, but generally I wear socks and shoes. This is same as shorts, I wear socks and shoes with my shorts and people don't complain about my hairy legs. Bottom line is I am a guy, not a gal so who would care if my legs are hairy or not anyway!
Women have the freedom to wear a skirt or pants in public as they choose. This didn't happen automatically or without pain. Women earned this right by donning their pants and heading out into public on a regular basis. They were even refused entrance to some businesses because of their chosen attire. They courageously stuck with it and eventually won acceptance. This took decades to resolve.
I know that there are many men who would like to have the freedom to wear skirts in public and I know several who are actively promoting them. My experiences wearing skirts in public are mixed, generally people are surprised, some are amused and some are just plain idiotic. I don't wear them for the general public, however, I wear them for me.
