Although adoption might make the child feel better, as he or she would not be treated like a outcast versus being isolated in a group of HIV-positive kids, he or she would face a greater negative peer pressure through jeering, (direct or indirect)insults.
AIDS is the final stage of HIV infection. Typically, children who contract this disease from their infected parents would die even at an earlier age due to their defective immunity. Also, their childhood would be filled with episodes of painful memories: drugs to battle the infection, being ostracized by ignorant individuals.
Furthermore, there is a great financial burden: the huge cost of drugs to treat this infection. No drugs could ever cure it, for it is a vicious disease. Various of potent drugs are designed to prolong the HIV-positive kid's lifespan, but these drugs have many negative side-effects: loss of appetite, constant nausea... There is also additional risk of unwanted infection to family members of the adopter. Would the adopter want to expose their family members to this 'risk'?
Lastly, children with AIDS will die at a young age. Children with physical or mental disabilities will live longer. The impending loss of the adopted HIV-positive child might create some negative atmosphere in the adoption family, which may prevent the adopted child to live his(her)life fully.
There are many factors to consider in the adoption of children with AIDS. There are different considerations criteria for adopting children with different disabilities and/or diseases. Have we truly consider the factors, besides the 'human' side of adopting children with AIDS? For having considered these factors, I think it would be a better choice not to have them for adoption.
