Can perfect pitch be taught or is it an innate talent?

Perfect pitch is God-given...PERIOD!
This said, there are many of us, this writer included, that have
relative pitch of varying degrees.
An 'almost' perfect degree of relative pitch can be aquired.
A simple exercise for this is to sit at a piano and 'aquaint' yourself with the 12 notes
that exist in music.
Start on 'middle C' and work your way up and down the keyboard...play each of the 12 notes

many times...the more that you hear each note, the quicker that the sound of each note will implant itself in your mind....
Of course, there are seven and one half octaves on an 88 note piano. Each of these 7-plus octaves contain the twelve notes that were previously mentioned. My personal choice of octaves to conduct this exersise would be the octave in the middle of the keyboard.
Guitarists and other instrumentalists can apply the principles stated here for piano and receive the same benefits...it is very important to say out loud the note that you are working on...this will help your mind to memorize the distinct sound that every note has.

I assure you that if you conduct this exercise for ten minutes a day, in about one month you will be able to better recognize notes that you hear.
To test your newly-learned skills, get a friend to test you by playing notes for you.
You will invariably surprise yourself with your newly found and/or better developed pitch relationship!
