person. She was very different."
By the mid 1950's Audrey was the most photographed woman in Hollywood. Virtually untrained in the acting profession and in such a short time her natural talents propelled her to the heights that many who encountered her believed she deserved. Seemingly unaffected by all the sudden admiration She went back to Broadway in "Ondine" with her future first husband Mel Ferrer, who was introduced to Audrey by Gregory Peck. The two eventually
chose a lifestyle removed from the glamour of Hollywood as she chose a quaint little vine covered estate in Tolochenaz, Switzerland with a wonderful view of the Swiss and French Alps. It was Audrey's desire to have children and live a perfectly 'normal' life, and she successfully guarded her privacy and her children from the Hollywood limelight. According
to her son Sean, she could go to the open market amongst the people in Tolochenaz and although they were aware of who she was they treated her like any other resident. He also pointed out that Audrey showed no desire to 'act like anything but a wife and caring mother'. That was all she cared about. Occasionally she would venture back to Hollywood to do films
in part to stay busy during some trying times (such as her divorce from Ferrer in 1968). Unforgettable films like "My Fair Lady", "Breakfast At Tiffany's" and "Wait Until Dark". She married Andrea Dotti, an Italian psychiatrist in 1969 and soon after had her second son, Luca. The marriage ended in divorce, and later Audrey met the man who would be with her
till the end of her life, Dutch actor Robert Wolders.
Audrey Hepburn was a UNICEF Goodwill Ambassador from 1988 till her death in 1993. As she once read to her son Sean from a poem by Sam Levenson, "Remember, if you ever need a helping hand, you'll find one at the end of your arm. As you grow older you will discover that you have two hands. One for helping yourself, the other for helping others. "
She campaigned for goodwill and to feed starving children across the globe. She did this out of a genuine love for all humanity, not for 'publicity'. Even off- screen, millions witnessed the love that this woman wanted to share with the world. On screen, millions fell in love with this glowing personality whose every move could do no wrong. She was truly a very unique
person unmatched by any other.
Audrey Hepburn died of colon cancer on January 20, 1993, in Tolochenaz, Vaud, Switzerland, where she was interred as well. She was sixty-three. Grateful for her own good fortunes following the tragic days of Nazi rule, a time which obviously had a huge effect on her, she spent the remaining years of her life unselfishly helping others. She will always
remain in the hearts and memories of many (myself included) as one of the most beautiful, truly remarkable human beings to have graced the planet. High praise for an actress, and an individual whom you don't personally know, but you can feel the 'love' from afar.
