The whack jobs that are the conservative religious right are at it again. This time they are screaming in their high shrill voices that the Girl Scouts of America who are being hijacked by the liberal agenda. Please, someone put some medication in their water, maybe that will decrease their paranoia.

But then again this is not really surprising. The only thing the conservative religious right has going is its ability to attack anything and everything. It has no positive plan for America, other than returning us to some 1930s fantasy realm where they imagine no problems existed, and people meekly ran their families and lives according to the gospel. And if you disagree with them, you are damned.

It is a measure of how out of touch they are with the realities of today that they can seek to condemn the Girl's Scouts organization for wanting to educate kids on things they are exposed to on TV, and in many cases in real life, everyday of their lives. War, disease, sex and racism exist in the real world and kids will learn about them, and learn about them much more quickly because of new information and media technologies. Pinning this on an imagined "liberal agenda" is political claptrap, and a disingenuous and dangerous propaganda trick that could cause more harm through continuing and encouraging "head in the sand" ignorance and inaction.

But of course they, those oh so self-righteous conservatives, have nothing to do with it. Sure, and Bin Laden had nothing to do with the World Trade Center. The uber-capitalism encouraged and supported by these self-appointed guardians of childhood target these kids with message far above their head. Kids aren't being left to be kids millions are spent each day trying to get 10 years to convince their mommies to let them wear make up and do other things far beyond their age.

Where's the outrage against that? I'll tell you where; it's been squashed under the dollar sign. As long as it's profitable it seems it's okay. Morality has a price tag. But try and do something to keep these kids from getting in trouble by providing education and awareness, and you become a public enemy to some reactionary right wingers. These myopic hypocrites think themselves somehow superior by espousing some mythical code of ethics that most of them don't live by. They are only fooling themselves.

Educating kids about the rights they face is the responsibility of everyone. This is not the 1930, 1940, 1950, 1960 or any other decade. This is today. These kids face media and peer pressure we never dreamed of. It is up to us, as responsible people, agencies and as a society, to provide them with the best tools we can to help them survive. If you feel uncomfortable with some of the topics due to your religious beliefs, you don't have to discuss them. But don't misinterpret your right to determine what you think is appropriate for you as somehow being a right to censor and censure others. There are too many out there today all to willing to do that already.
