Short stories: Halloween in 2007

by Elizabeth Dawn

Created on: October 31, 2007

Despite the warning that had been issued to the town after last year's Halloween massacre, Melissa walked the pitch black streets in her favorite come-hither costume. New to the area of Hollow Lane, she dismissed the tales of the blood bath that had allegedly occurred one year ago on this very night. Just silly townfolk being overcautious and trying to frighten the new outsider is what she told herself. She bundled her cape around herself, shivering with both the cold and anticipation, as she continued her Halloween tradition of trick-or-treating. An old ghost story wasn't about to stop her.

The roads were so dark it made it near impossible for Melissa to catch herself in time. The enormous tree branch seemed to come out of nowhere and Melissa fell with a hard thud. Melissa awoke with a start to the sound of the high pitched shrill feedback of the cab driver's walkie talkie. Silently cursing to herself, she looked around, realizing she recognized none of the scenery that was passing by her at incredibly high speeds. Banging on the divider window, she screamed when she saw that the driver's seat was EMPTY! The cab was soaring up mountainous terrain higher and at breakneck speeds. Melissa tried the door handles, windows, and all possible openings; it was no use because everything was either jammed or broken. Suddenly, the car lurched to a halt at the precipice of the mountain. Melissa was thrown into the divider window, shattering a partial area. Spitting blood from her mouth, she realized two teeth were also ejected with the bloody saliva.

Faint whispers were all around her. She couldn't make out the words first, but slowly they became more concise. " Listen, listen," the
