The curse of the werewolf. A man transforming into a vicious beast when the moon is full. A human being changing into a beast is a mainstay of the horror genre. Dr Jekyll and Mr. Hyde; The Fly; Zombies; Dracula; and many, many more. Is it man's attempt to give an explanation for the dark side of his nature? Whatever the psychology may be behind it all, it is a common theme for horror movies.
My top ten werewolf films of all time in descending order are;
10). I Was a Teenage Werewolf. 1957. Pre-Bonanza Michael Landon is a troubled teen who gets hypnotized into being a werewolf. This film actually made some good money for American International Pictures.
Michael Landon, Whit Bissell
Directed by Gene Fowler Jr. Written by Herman Cohen and Aben Kandel
9). Frankenstein Meets Wolfman. 1943 Okay, I'm a sucker for the old movies from my childhood. Frankenstein and Wolfman? I loved it.
Bela Lugosi, Patrick Knowles, Lon Chaney Jr.
Directed by Roy William Neill. Written by Curt Siodmak.
8). Wolfen. 1981. One of several 80's werewolf movies. This film strayed from the norm. Bringing Native American lore into the plot and the use of POV (seeing action from the perspective of the "wolf") put it on my top ten list.
Albert Finney, Edward James Olmos, Gregory Hines
Directed by Michael Wadleigh. Screenplay written by David Eyre Jr. and Michael Wadleigh
7). Teen Wolf. 1985. Michael J. Fox as a teenage werewolf. How do you hide being a werewolf while still going to high school? How about a werewolf playing basketball? Nothing scary about this one. It is fun to watch. If you liked the Back to the Future movies, you'll enjoy this one.
Directed by Rod Daniel. Written by Jeph Loeb and Matthew Weisman.
6). The Cursed. 2005. Keeping it in the family; brother and sister werewolves this time. This was an okay movie. Wes Craven has a way with horror films.
Christina Ricci, Jesse Eisenberg
Directed by Wes Craven. Written by Kevin Williamson.
5). Silver Bullet. 1985. How bad can it be, it's Stephen King. Not one of my favorites King movies but nevertheless, a decent werewolf movie.
Corey Haim and Gary Busey
Directed by Daniel Attias. Written by Stephen King.
4). An American Werewolf in London. 1981. This movie was a comedy/horror. There were no well known stars. It is entertaining to watch the young American completely out of his element as all the locals completely deny the existence of a wolf/werewolf.
