Working up towards the all-time best werewolf movies, here are my top ten:
10. "An American Werewolf In Paris" (1998)
Staring Tom Everett Scott (That Thing You Do), this is a must see for fans of the genre who don't take themselves too seriously. It is a sequel to the classic 1981 movie, "An American Werewolf in London," though it doesn't do much justice to the original. For blood-drenched gore and sexy lady werewolves, this is an "all-right" flick.
9. "Teen Wolf" (1985)
A classic, no question. "Teen Wolf" stars Michael J. Fox, fresh from "Family Ties," as a young man struggling with an inherited affliction, and typical teen angst. It's a fun family movie, bloodless and engaging, and one of those where you find yourself truly rooting for the "monster."
8. "The Wolf Man" (1941)
The original werewolf film. If you're a fan of the genre and haven't seen "The Wolf Man," your membership card to the wolf club will be revoked. Though a bit on the cheesy side, this movie stars some of the most well-known names of the era: Lon Chaney, Jr., Claude Rains, Patric Knowles, and the infamous Bela Lugosi. A triumph of it's time, "The Wolf Man" is the embodiment of classic horror.
7. "An American Werewolf in London" (1981)
The originator of the "American Werewolf in" series, this romp of a movie shares a lot of similarities with it's sequel ("in Paris"). Though the storyline is nearly exact, the overall quality and feel of the film are head and shoulders above it's sequel. Starring David Naughton, Griffin Dunne and Jenny Agutter, this cult classic is one for the ages.
6. "Curse of the Werewolf" (1961)
Another classic, "Curse" follows the journey of bastard child of rape, Leon (Oliver Reed), who's tainted existence leads him to a life of terror. This terrifying (and sometimes touching) film is a British offering, based on the novel "The Werewolf of Paris" by Guy Endore. Amusingly, this particular story line found another place in history as the basis for Dreamwork's "Wallace and Gromit: The Curse of the Were-Rabbit."
5. "Underworld" (2006)
This recent addition to the werewolf genre is both captivating and intriguing. Pitting modern day vampires against their archenemies, werewolves, this movie delivers with a fast paced, engrossing story. It also doesn't hurt that we get to feast our eyes on sexy vampiress Kate Beckinsale (Van Helsing) and the adorable hybrid Scott Speedman (TV's Felicity). This film has one sequel in the bag, and another
