To connect two systems you need two computers with networks cards installed in them and a cross cable.
A Crossover Cable is a Cat5 cable with two RJ45 Connectors on both sides, these are the parts which will be inserted into the network cards.
Here it is important to remember that a Crossover Cable is necessary as the two devices to be connected with each other are same, i.e. Computers, LAPTOPS, Desktop etc. but if they were different devices like a hub, router or switch then the cable to use would have been Straight Cable.
To make a crossover cable, you use two different wiring orders for each end. On one end use the standard color order: White/Orange-Orange,White/Gree n-Blue,White/Blue-Green,White/ Brown-Brown
For the other end, switch the location of the orange and green pairs (so you switch white-orange with the white-green, and switch the solid orange with the solid green giving you the color order: White/Green-Green,White/Orange -Blue,White/Blue-Orange,White/ Brown-Brown).
When the wire is complete, just insert them in both the network cards of system. If you are using Windows XP or Windows Vista then IP address for system will be automatically assigned and your two systems will be activated. But If you are using Windows 98 then you have to manually enter IP's which usually are 192.168.0.1 and 192.168.0.2.
Now your systems are connected and your local network is complete and ready for use.
