Quick! How many werewolf movies can you think of? I will put money down that most people would be able to think of five werewolf movies, maybe six tops.
But I love the genre. I have made it my mission to see every werewolf movie ever made. There have been more than many people might think. Remember Teen Wolf and Teen Wolf 2? How about all three Ginger Snaps movies? Then of course there is Wolfen, but that is not for sure a werewolf movie, since there were never any transformations. But there are those who will adamantly defend the idea that those were not ordinary wolves in that flick.
In any case, let's have a look at the top ten werewolf movies ever produced by an American movie company. Why this qualification? Because there are quite a few high-quality werewolf flicks that are foreign-made.
Let's do this in descending order.
#10 Underworld
This flick pits werewolves and vampires against each other. It is only barely on the list, and that is because I am not including foreign made films. The show has Kate Beckinsale in one of her kick* roles in which she gets to wear leather and do flips. Scott Speedman plays the werewolf that could end the eternal battle between bloodsucker and lycanthrope.
The movie is fun, has great production values, but is weak in plot.
#9 Ginger Snaps
A great twist on the werewolf story, with one sister undergoing the transformation while the other sister is trying to hide it. The movie has a few good jolt scenes, some nice effects, and surprisingly good acting. The thing is that it just is not as original as it wants to be and it tries a little too hard to be smart. They shouldn't have taken themselves quite so seriously.
#8 Wolf
Great because it has Michelle Pfeiffer. Lame because it has Jack Nicholson, once again unconvincingly playing a man women can love. The production values are okay, but the transformations are pretty weak.
Good because of the satisfying ending. Hint: Michelle Pfeiffer is a hot werewolf.
#7 The Howling
This movie is based on the soft-core porn book by Gary Brandner. The effects are surprisingly cool, with the acting as good as it needs to be. Actually, The Howling IV is a more accurate adaptation of Brandner's book, in case you were wondering.
The movie would have been better without the heavy cliches and the sometimes ineffective satire. But again, the effects were so good that they won a Saturn award.
#6 I Was a Teenage Werewolf
