The Making Of A Mission Statement
Whether you're already in business or getting ready to start a business it's important to take the time out to define the purpose of your business and establish your mission statement.
To start building your mission statement, you will need to answer the following questions:
Who is your target market?
This identifies your ideal customer group or "niche". This is who you sell your products or services to.
What does your target market want and need?
This is where the really put the most emphasis on your mission statement. This section will detail what your client wants, needs and that you (hopefully) plan to fill it.
How can you meet their wants and fill their needs?
This section will make mention to the specific products or services you provide or perform and outline how you plan to create a benefit fulfilling the answers to the first two questions.
It's important to remember when writing your mission statement that you write in a way that the readers will fully understand. If you have to re-explain any part of it to make them understand what you have already conveyed, you have lost sight of your primary objective.
Focus on who it is that you are attempting to serve and explain your mission accordingly. Tell them what you know they need and how you can fulfill their need. Tell them what you do, not how you do it!
When preparing your mission statement ask yourself what adversity do your clients face that your service will help them with the most. Once you determine the question then you have found your answer or should I say your mission!
Please follow the steps below outline your mission statement. You will re-work it and re-write it several times - scrutinizing each word. That's OK. If you must - write, write and rewrite until you get it right!
When you're ready, plug the answer to these questions into this statement. This will be the first draft of your Mission Statement.
# 1 I / We provide.....
This should be easily answered by you. If not then you really need to re-think your whole marketing strategy. This is where you make it clear whom you are serving, because before you can serve them, you must know who they are.
Another quick note here is to develop a "niche". Don't try to serve everybody. You need to focus your marketing strategy to one unique target. If others come along that you can serve that are outside of your target group, great - serve them; but never lose focus of the target market.
Think of your market as a beam of light.
