Why blogging is such a bad idea

While I remain curious why anyone would want to share their personal information on a public forum, I have visited various blog sites that are supposed to be for sharing information and thought-provoking discussion.

I must say that, for the most part, I have been very disappointed in blogging. It seems that either I am visiting some very poor sites or there is a rampant disregard for fellow bloggers. For example, I recently visited a blogging site with a discussion thread concerning one blogger's attempt to start a discussion regarding the spiritual realm versus the physical. Almost every response (23 before I signed off) was literally insulting and offered no real discussion. Basically, the man was called a drug addict, an idiot, and a douche bag by his fellow bloggers for proffering up an idea for discussion.

Now, the fact that I don't personally know any of the contributors is a blessing to me. I only went to the thread because I found the topic title interesting. If I knew any of these people, I would have to seriously rethink my acquaintance with them. As it was, I had to ask why there was so much name-calling and no worthwhile input for or against the original idea. I guess I should feel lucky that I did not get a response.

This is an example of most sites I have visited messaging groups or blogs, whatever you want to call them. They have become a forum for rude people trying to pretend to be witty while they are exposing their own stupidity. Sound harsh? Well, try being on the receiving end of the rudely stupid and you'll feel denigrated. These people are not writers or comedians. It's like having a blogging heckler, or "bleckler".

While blogging could be used for lively discussion and information exchange, let the blogger beware. Whenever you put an idea out there, you may end up fielding more insults than insights.
