Pinku eiga: An introduction to Japanese hardcore grindcore

concentrated on finesse and increased dialog became known as "pink art". Gay themed films as well as those bridging the line between horror and erotica emerged during this era.

Later in the 1990's some of the established directors began to pursue their own experimental themes and, at least to some extent, ignored their audience. But the era was one of some highly imaginative soft porn films. Today these movies tend to reflect the insecurities of Japan's younger generation.

In the beginning the only requirements to make a pink film were that it contained the required number of sex acts, be about an hour in length, be produced on 16mm or 35mm film, be completed in a week's time and have an extremely limited budget. Another major influence on this genre was the strict taboo on showing genitals and pubic hair. This led to elements of symbolism and fetishism in many works of this genre.

The strict censorship has (ironically) helped define the pink film and forced its creators to become more creative than their American counterparts. They were the driving monetary source for Japan's film industry in the 1960's and 1970's. The makers of these films strove to bring reflection of the Japanese experience to the public eye be it through the media of adult entertainment.
