Let me first ask, what is happy? Because happy means different things to different people. If we agree that happy means notably fitting or effective then this is a good starting point.
Indeed some people's happiness in marriage can be another person's misery.

And to this day, what is ever after? Ever after what? Ever after the first sickness or the first baby or after divorce. Ever after could be a long time or it could be a short period of time. So this statement of: happy ever after is a loaded ticking time bomb.

In many instances it is us following our culture belief systems that create this happy
ever after syndrome. I saw recently on the Sopranos that a wife asked for a divorce.
The husband responded that Italians do not get divorces. This is my point if you mom
and pop and your belief system says you should be happy. In most instances you will be happy.
This happy ever after, is like a format you follow. You may not be happy, but you follow the format so you are happy.

We are happy if we believe what we do makes us happy. And we will stay happy in a particular area of our lives if do not grow and our paradigm doesn't change. Years ago when I worked in New York,going to work in the greatest city in the world made me happy. Why? well I had lived in Jersey City all my life and all this culture was in New York City. It follows I believed I was happy because this was notably and fitting for my life . Today I go to New York City sparingly and others things make me happy like peace & quiet.
