I think that gays and lesbians should be allowed civil unions but not marriage. Although I am a pretty open-minded person, I just don't think the institution of marriage belongs anywhere except between one man and one woman. This is not neccessarily due to my religious beliefs, it's more from a moral and traditional point of view. I think that men and women were intended to complement one another, not two men and two women, and that's why marriage should be reserved to be between one man and one woman only.

Gays and lesbians absolutely should be allowed civil unions however, and this is purely from a practical point of view. If they are going to live together as if they were married, and share their lives, then they should be allowed the same protections and benefits of a traditionally married couple. If one of them is in a major accident or dies unexpectedly, and they have been the primary source of income or support, then it's a good idea to have a civil union in place to protect the non-injured or partner left behind.

Civil unions would also give gays and lesbians right within a relationship, especially if there are children involved. It would protect them in cases of domestic abuse, allow them to have insurance benefits, make child custody cases easier, etc. I can't see one good reason why gays and lesbians should NOT be allowed civil unions, when it would protect both of them and give them rights that every couple, whether gay, lesbian, or heterosexual, should have.
