Tonight it was answered
The signal we sent out years ago
Blasting information about our Earth
To backgrounds of Elvis and the Beatles
Then they answered, saying they would come
Hoping to exchange beliefs of two alien cultures
To learn, to be at peace
To exchange ideas
As the craft appeared, at the disappearing sun
The peoples of the Earth gathered to see this object
As great as the sky itself
love me tender' blasting from all four sides
It searched for a place to land
A place of relative peace, where no harm would come
It scanned in all directions:
North, East, South and West
In the mountains, over the seas, and across the plains
The searching light even penetrated the jungle
Where for the first time the gunfire stopped
The tanks stopped rolling
And the grenades stopped exploding
And the scanning neon beam stopped
In the only safe direction to go
Rising ever swiftly upwards
Yesterday' fading to the ears of the citizens of Earth
And a growing silence covered the globe
Where for one, just one instant, no one cried
Until a pop sounded, soon followed by an explosion
Then another
And another, and another, and another.
