Shape-shifting half-wolf, half-man, and the curse caused the werewolf to become an icon for moviegoers to enjoy throughout time. From the early movies of the thirties and forties, the draw has always been the transformation from man to beast and back again. Here are my picks for top 10 of all time.

#1 and the best , Lon Chaney did it best in 1941's The Wolf Man. Laurence Talbot, once bitten is cursed for all time to become a werewolf when the moon is full. You have to feel sorry for this character because the man does not want to hurt anyone and tries not to throughout the movie.

#2 Lon Chaney's Frankenstein Meets the Wolf Man; Larry Talbot tries to cure his curse.

#3 is 1945's Lon Chaney in House of Dracula is cured of lycanthropy, being a werewolf.

#4 I skip to 1974 and Legend Of The Werewolf with Peter Cushing in Paris.

#5 in 1980 came The Howling. With this movie came many sequels. These movies started to make the make-up and special effects more elaborate.

#6 1981, An American Werewolf In London with David Naughton. There was great make-up in this film.

#7 skip to 1994 and the great Jack Nicholson does a wonderful job as Wolf. He was a natural as a bitten victim of a werewolf.

#8 in 1997 came An American Werewolf In Paris and also the special effects of CGI making physical make-up perfect the creatures effects and all other processes extinct.

#9 in 2003 came Underworld, a strong battle between werewolves and vampires. CGI again was outstanding.

#10 in 2004 Van Helsing was fantastic CGI and the werewolf creatures exploded off the screen with their special effects.

As special effects, get better and more sophisticated the man-wolf persona of the ever-entertaining wolf man changing right before our eyes will continue to fill movie theaters. But to me no one will be better than Lon Chaney.
