Ahhh, Hallowe'en. The day my pumpkin comes out to play. It's large, lopsided, and green in places, but all that just makes it more interesting to my inner artist. Ordinary is blase and for other people. My pumpkin and I are unique!
I love the process of transforming an enormous squash into a work of art. Cutting the lid out will be a bit tricky as there are polyps, or warts, or some such bumpy things around the base of the stem. Very fitting for the occasion, but hard to cut.
Once done though, I will become giddy with excitement as the heady smell of stringy pulp fills my nostrils and signals the time to thrust a hand inside to remove the squishy stuffing. I could save the seeds for roasting, but I won't. The bond I share with the pumpkin would make that seem cannibalistic somehow.
I've asked around, but have yet to meet anyone else who takes the time and trouble to really connect with their Hallowe'en pumpkin. I find that curious. My pumpkin and I transform together. We're in the zone, creator and created are one, and I shall carve with reverent glee.
I don't yet know what persona my jack-o-lantern will have. Could be an angel, could be the devil himself. Judging by the shape, it may be Barney Rubble. I'll find out when the pumpkin tells me.
