Mohamed (peace be unto him) and his character. As I learned about his character, I corrected my character. I began to forgive more and be patient. I learned that Allah (God) has control over everything. I learned that we were made from Prophet Adam and he was made from different colors of clay. I learned to love people and diversity. I learned so much that I am still learning, today.
Today and after 911, it seems that the view of Muslims have taken on a different perspective. Despite how the media has portrayed us, Muslims are peacekeeping people. There is an extremist in every religion. In most religions like Islam, suicide is a sin. It seems that those who were reared with family ills of prejudice and discrimination focused on another population of people to discriminate upon. Living as a Muslim, African-American and female have joined the ranks of titles of the triple whammy. With 20 years of education, a 3.6 g.p.a. and licensed in everything under the moon.....Why am I having trouble with getting employment? Why have I been asked to take off my Islamic outfit by friends, family members and prospective employers just so everyone else is comfortable in a work setting? Why have I been passed up promotional positions because of the ills of others?
I was born and reared in America and despite my childhood experiences, I have never imagined in this day and age that Living as a Muslim in America would make me feel more like a prisoner than the freedom we all enjoy and want in our day to day lives.
