License To Wed stars Robin Williams, Mandy Moore, and John Kransinski. It was directed by Ken Kwapis who has some ties to star Kransinski having directed many episodes of the television show The Office, which Kransinski also stars in. The story follows to lovers seeking to get married in a church run by a priest who forces them to take his marriage preparation class before he will allow the ceremony to take place.
The characters aren't really likeable at all; not really. However, the film does dial down Robin Williams just enough that I was actually able to watch the film. Usually he goes on a madman rampage slobbering all over himself and eating up precious time. Mandy Moore just seems like her usual romantic comedy self and John Kransinski is justJohn Kransinski. Actually I thought DeRay Davis, who plays the friend of Kransinski's character in the movie, was fairly good in his role.
The story is one of those if you just sit back and let entertainment wash over you without thinking then you can get into a couple of laughs. The comedy isn't side-splitting funny, but overall the movie was filled with cute moments. However, once you reach the end the over-the-top romance clichs start popping out in full force and you can stamp the case of the DVD with the words CHICK FLICK loud and big.
This review is short as is my list of complaints and/or compliments for the film. On a grading scale it would at least muster up a C, which is a passing grade, just not entailing it as the brightest or best film. There will be those like me who think it was cute and okay for a rent and then those who hate it completely and bark about how dumb the characters must be for the plot to work, but I would wonder about the sanity of anyone who thinks it is extremely wonderful and great.
