The argument of the worst of two evils could easily divide two oppressed groups of people. It is important to remember that BOTH groups are oppressed. Both racism and sexism can result in violent acts and emotional trauma.

In recent news there is a lot of talk about nooses and racism. It is important to realize the impact of race related crimes, however many gender related crimes go unnoticed.

Sexism goes far beyond less than equal pay and traditional gender roles. It is rare to see a hate crime toward women in a newspaper that actually states it as a hate crime rather than a fatal disagreement. And what about crimes like rape and sexual assault? In Iowa, Several women were sexually assaulted walking down the street in a college town. It continued for a year before the police told the public and released photos of suspects. Most women of gender related crimes won't even speak up due to fear or believing that it is their fault, therefore actual percentages of hate crimes related to gender can not be accurately determined.

In school children are taught tolerance. Although tolerance should be taught as accepting ANY difference in another person, I fear it is far too often enforced toward things like race and less toward gender. Gender should be just as important of an issue as race.

It seems that society accepts violence toward women, but violence toward race is unacceptable. I hear so many stories about women who have been raped or assaulted by men who find enough courage to go to the police, but find that the justice system has failed them. IF anyone will listen to them, it seems that little is done to punish the criminals that violated them.

Although racism and sexism are both very important issues and both have dramatic effects on our society, victims of sexism go with very little support. Because of the lack of support for victims of sexism from our society, these victims suffer more than victims of racism. Crimes against race and gender have a lot in common, but not enough for society to provide support for both.
