When I lived in Genoa (Italy), the historical mariner capital and main town of Liguria with 640,000 inhabitants, I used to take the bus or the underground, during the morning or the afternoon and to drive my own car, above all, in the evening.
This was a necessity because traffic jams were very frequent everywhere in the town and, at least, public buses had the advantage of some car-free preferential lanes in the main streets, while cars remained stuck and "impotent".
Taking a bus, I didn't need to worry and get nervous looking for a parking for my car, a real "mission impossible" in all the central area of Genoa. The few parking places are few, expensive and nearly always full.
So, I took a bus for not to lose too much time and to save a lot of money of fuel for my car with a monthly ticket for buses network.
Another advantage was that I was more "ecologically sustainable", not producing also pollution; the cost of a bus for 75 minutes was about 1 and was even much more convenient buying a monthly ticket.
In the evening, instead, buses are very rare and cars remain the only possible option; this was a mess on Saturday or Friday evening, when there's nearly the same traffic of the afternoon, but there're very few buses.
Another advantage was also that of not risking dangerous and expensive car accidents and failures, given that roads in Genoa are too often narrow, curved and steep along the hills, so that driving over there is often a challenge to destiny and to the resistance of our nerves, even for who is used to do it.
I can assure you that, if you learn driving, parking and manoeuvring a car in Genoa, you will have no problems everywhere because the difficulties this town creates are, maybe, the maximum. Just for this, public transportations here are so precious.
So, it's better stay passive on a bus, when possible sitting down.
At this point, is also necessary to talk about the disadvantages of taking buses.
Too frequently, along many lines, buses are too scarce and not punctual, letting us waiting up to 20-30 minutes; so, they're often overcrowded in the most critical hours, either in the centre and in the outskirts.
This clearly shows that buses are still insufficient in this town because, too frequently, when buses are full, also the streets are nearly blocked by traffic and all those people driving cars haven't real alternatives.
