I have never been a big fan of werewolf movies, yet when I see a good werewolf film I truly do enjoy it. My top 5 favorite werewolf films have all kept my attention and I can easily recommend them to anybody whether they like werewolf movies or not.
The top werewolf movie is An American Werewolf in London. I loved this film for its original story and concept. It was made in 1981 when this films special effects were stunning. These days you would look at it and not be as impressed, but it is still a great werewolf movie.
The second best werewolf movie is Wes Craven's Cursed. This film was made in 2005 and starred Christina Ricci. I enjoyed how Cursed kept you guessing on who the real killer werewolf was. You knew the main characters were starting to become werewolves since they were bitten but you did not know until the end who the main one was. There were many twists and turns that were effective and there were great special effects.
1992 film Wolf starring Jack Nicholson and Michelle Pfeiffer was not so much a scary film as it was a psychological thriller. Jack's character had gotten bit by a werewolf and found himself changing without knowing what was happening to him. In the meantime, he falls in love with Michelle Pfeiffer. James Spader portrays the other werewolf that tries to kill off Nicholson to win the love of Pfeiffer.
The fourth best werewolf movie is the 80's flick Teen Wolf starring Michael J. Fox. It was a corny, but fun movie about a teenager that came to the realization that he was becoming instead of a man, a werewolf. He was a basketball player for his high school and would change into a werewolf when least expected. It was one of the few werewolf films that were comedies.
Number five on the list is Abbot and Costello's 1948 comedy Abbot and Costello meet Frankenstien. It also included other halloween favorites as dracula and the wolf man.
The remaining five werewolf movies are as follows. Stephen King's book Silver Bullet was turned into a film. In 1985 Silver Bullet was released and it was a simple story about a boy trying to kill a werewolf and convincing his family that there was one. In 1992 Sleepwalkers was a story written by King made for the screen. It was about a mother and son who were mutant werewolves. Sleepwalkers was silly at times but also gave a few good scares.
The remaining three werewolf movies have got to go to Nastassjia Kinski's Cat People, The Howling made in 1981, and Ginger Snaps released in 2000.
