Finding the right balance between family time, work, school, sports and other activities can be challenging for any parent. You work full time which only usually leaves about 3 to 4 hours of time to spend with your family. Take away about 2 hours for sports and about 1 hour for dinner and you don't have a whole lot left.
Think about the quality of time you want to spend with your kids. Do you want to be sitting on a couch in front of a TV not talking or learning anything about your children or there personalities? Or would it be better to play a game or talk or take walks together? What is the value of TV really? Dose it improve there minds in any way? Dose it help to get them through a hard time in there lives? Will they ultimately be a better person because they watched Drake and Josh or Sponge bob Squarepants?
Our time as parents is short to begin with but waisting it is just a foolish thing to do. I grew up watching TV almost every day. Am I damaged because of it? No I don't think so, but I also didn't have a very good relationship with my mother when I was growing up either. I didn't know how to talk to her about my problems or things that I was dealing with at school. There was never time for us to sit down and really know each other. I am grateful that I have that time now with my daughter. She is 11 years old and in the 6th grade. She talks to me about boys and friends and problems with her teachers. If we watched TV we would never get that quality time together to really know one and other and establish that trust.
So the next time you sit down to watch TV think about what you are watching and decide it it is more important than the needs of your children? The bottom line is where are we leading our children and how can we be better parents?
