Weighing the value of earning academic degrees

A degree has never and will never give people the life skills they need to survive a fast paced world of business and commerce. It is merely a piece of paper which denotes that he or she has the relevant area of experteise in any given field.
I have both studied at degree level and also worked hard within business to gain senior positions within a few companies. The employer is always keenest to know that his new associate can and will bring justice to his company and that the junior will have enough about them to make responsible decisions in his or her absence.

To date, I have never been asked about my study in terms of what I can bring to any senior position. I have however been asked several times about the experience I have to bring to another company; something that is priceless! Yes to have qualifications on paper can propel us into a better footing on the ladder of success, however, it you don't have the right 'people skills' and effectiveness you need to make it in todays rat race, it's a slippy slope back down that very same ladder. Because the hand of experience speaks volumes; more than a piece of paper ever can!
So given my time again, would I do the same thing? Would I seek to work hard and not focus as much on academia? Well for me, I worked to reep the dividens of what I have to day, for others they need to do things their way. And for one sector; there is only one way to get there; aim high, work hard and keep focused. It's a dog eat dog world out there!
