The cyclists' toolbox: What to have, and how to use it

Cycling! A sport for the not so faint of heart!
For those of us that find it stimulating and challenging, there is nothing quite like cycling! Say that 5 times real fast! Whether you prefer the satin feel of asphalt or the rough terrain of Mother Nature beneath your wheels, cycling is for all ages. The scent of the air, the sound of the environment around you, now you are in your own world. With the tremendous popularity that cycling has attained, both open and secluded trails are everywhere. Cyclists are springing up in all sorts of places, and safety has become an issue. So, like the Boy Scout motto, "always be prepared", a cyclist also must be prepared. Regardless of the length or location of your ride, there are certain essentials that you need to carry. Like the card says, "I never leave home without it."

Personally, I carry a lightweight, waterproof back pack. This will hold everything you need.

First, and most importantly, is identification. Carry two copies, one on your person and one in your backpack. In the event of an accident, emergency responders can identify you. Include with your name, address and phone number any pertinent medical information such as allergies. If you have a medical condition, be sure to list it along with your primary care physician. This can save valuable time, not to mention your life.

Second, always have water. There is a huge variety of containers in style and sizes that attach directly onto the frame of your bike. This is convenient and out of the way, however, some people prefer the camel packs that attach directly to you. I recommend that you freeze the water in the container, that way it is usually still cold when you take a drink.

Third, a complete repair kit. This can be purchased in any cycling or Sporting Goods store, or you can make your own. Your kit should include a folding Hex Wrench, a spare tube, and chain repair kit, a rain poncho, and a compact inflater. You can have the inflater mounted on the frame. Do not over load this repair pack. Weight is a real issue in balance.

Fourth, carry a cell phone. For emergency purposes only! In case you need assistance, and happen to be where you can acquire a signal, a cell phone can be your best friend. If you don't own one, then purchase one of those disposable models and carry it in your pack.

Fifth, is food. There are literally hundreds of nourishing snack ideas to carry. Energy bars are popular and convenient. They are already wrapped and some are quite tasty. Trail mix and granola are also good choices. They supply energy and nutrition to replenish what you loose on your ride.

In any event, keep it simple and lightweight. Don't over dramatize problems occurring. Most rides are markedly uneventful. If you carry the "toolbox" that is described above, you will be prepared for most any complication and have a great trip.
So ...get your wheels rolling and experience the adventures that are unique to cycling!
