When visiting a campus to see if you want to go to school there you must always make sure that it is a safe campus. If the campus is large and has many students then you run a higher risk of putting yourself in harms way.
Some of the best ways to make sure that the campus is safe is to check out how many officers are available. First, it is important that they have police on campus and then when you see them around ask them how safe they keep the campus. Are there a lot of calls that they go on that seems life-threatening. Ask various students how safe they feel and have they heard of anything bad going on. You can ask them if they ever felt as though they should leave since they felt their safety was at risk.
Another way to tell if the campus is safe is by checking online for any crime such as murders, thefts, or sexual harassment ocurring at the school. You can call the local police to the area that the campus is located and ask them if there has been any problems at the campus. Chances are they have been called out there by the campus police if there was anything to worry about.
Walking through the campus is always a good way to check to see if there is anything to worry about. Watch how people walk. Do they seem cautious or worried by walking close together with their friends and watching you with caution since they have not seen you before? Do women tend to keep their purses close by or not carry one at all? Finally, if there tends to be casual settings where people are sitting around laughing a lot and seem carefree and you see officers walking around periodically, then chances are the campus is pretty safe and there are not that many concerns.
