Staying in the college dorm during my college years has certainly been among the most special and significant moments of my life, as the experiences that I encountered during that time cannot be exchanged for any other thing in this world. Concentrating on the horror part of my college dorm experience, two incidences remain vivid in my mind. I'll try my best to describe each incident as detailed as I can remember.

Incident 1: The break-in incident

I can remember vividly, on the 23rd of August 2006, I was hanging around the computer pool in college surfing the Internet as a mode of "chilling out" after all the long-winded and boring lectures on Wednesday. Whilst I was enjoying my quality time with the Internet, oblivious to everything else, I received a phone call from my dorm-mate claiming that our dorms have been ransacked inside-out. Fear swept me like never before and within minutes I was back in my dorm.

I was devastated when I found my laptop computer was not where I last left it. Even a small sum of money I kept under my bed mattress for emergency situations disappeared as well. At that point of time, I just couldn't take the huge blow and continued searching frantically for any chance that they might still be around, even though deep inside me I know that it is impossible for those things to reappear. After searching for a good 15 minutes, I gave up and conceded to the fact that my laptop computer and money are forever gone.

Calling back to my parents that night relating the incident, I got a big scolding for keeping money under the bed mattress when I should be keeping it in the bank and withdrawing only when needed. However, they didn't scold me for the missing laptop as it would be stolen regardless of where it was kept in the dorm. The next day, I reported the incident to the college student affairs department for further investigation, but until my college graduation, the culprit was never identified.

Incident 2: The three-feet-tall mountain

One day last year, I was struggling with some chemistry tutorial questions. The questions stumped me so badly that I decided to consult one of my dorm-mates who was well-known for his superiority in his chemistry knowledge. I knocked on his room door and he answered at the door. I told him my intention and he agreed to help to the best of his ability.

Whilst asking the questions, my eyes strayed here and there into his room (it's our human nature to be inquisitive) and one sight at the corner of his room caught me by surprise and horror. There was literally a mountain of unwashed underwears at the corner of his room! If I'm not mistaken, the mountain could have been 3 feet high! Luckily, I managed to maintain my composure so he didn't realize what I had saw.

After questioning some of my other dorm-mates, I found out that my chemistry-whiz dorm-mate comes from quite a well-to-do family. He is quite lazy in washing his underwears, so instead of washing his underwears, he buys new ones each time he runs out of underwears to wear. That more of less explains the mountain of underwears at the corner of his room.

So, those are my horror experiences during my college years staying in the college dorm. Looking back at those experiences as a whole, they certainly bring back mixed feelings to me such as devastation in the first incident as well as laughter and shock in the second. These experiences have taught me in some way or other, that is why I will never trade these experiences for anything else in the world.
