Reflections: Thoughts on being gay

Dear Whitman, Merrill, and Lorca as well,

This will perhaps come off as a tirade, and will probably be interpreted in the wrong vein. With that disclaimer, bring it on. Let's open discussion. Today, it's hard to think there are still taboos people don't talk about, but apparently there are plenty. Living towards the edge of the tsunami wave gives me a better vantage point, but sometimes I forget where I reside. What am I talking about, bon question? The Gays, if you will; a name that has become quite apt describing family in general, especially those of us in the younger crowd. In examining many social groups, especially the ones I belong to, I don't think I've wanted to laugh more. Not laugh at people, but laugh at the ridiculousness of the situation. Ok, perhaps not every gay is brilliant, or knows where Manchu Pichu is. The difference between chiffron and saffron, gabardine and grenadine. Some are tall, some are short, some are fat, some are skinny. Some are black, some are white, some work out a lot, others don't. This small population that's not quite as small but used to being different.

All of a sudden being gay has normalized, and people begin to say so what. It's lost its shock value, when there never should have been one in the first place, and if that's the reaction one expects when they come out, well I can't say much but it's ok to accept yourself. That's beside the point.

The point is that one cannot identify oneself solely these days simply by being gay. People are now asking for depth of character. Sometimes there is, sometimes there isn't. That doesn't even matter. What people really want, I think more than any definition or label, is honesty. Simply be honest in who you are, and if one's unsure then it is ok to be unsure. One of the perks of being gay or thinking of being gay is for once males are allowed to blur gender lines. Not that it was solely up to females, but just as in the female community being promiscuous is frowned upon, in male culture subverting one's gender is frowned upon. Until now.

There are lots of people who need convincing slowly, and one should only push boundaries right below breaking point. It's quite unwise to knock someone over the head and scream "Be comfortable with who I am," because then the result is a belligerent, unsure possible-gay and a quite angry person who will lash out after being cornered. I feel this only begins to skim the surface.

I consider being gay a sort of precarious situation,
