Becoming aware of "self" as a whole being.
It sounds pretty simple, until you examine what and who you are. You're a physical being, a spiritual being, an emotional being, an intelligent being, and even an unconscious observer to your own being.
My personal journey in self awareness began in my early 30's. Up until this point, I had been so completely consumed by outside influences, that my inner self was a complete and total mystery to me. So my starting place had to be the beginning, or what I call the base. As small children, even before we are able to communicate our observations, we are making them each and every day.
So much of who we become is determined, not by our own actions, but by our earliest observations of the people we modeled ourselves after. When a baby hears a soft soothing voice, and feels comforted by it, those same sounds will continue to have a comforting effect on them as they grow to adulthood, though they may not know why. It is at this subconscious level our true beings thrive and grow.
At the conscience level, our brains are always busy being aware of our surroundings, our company or our task at hand. So it is very important to take breaks from the conscience mind, perhaps through meditation, nature walks, or even hot baths. All that is required is that you remove yourself from outside influences and just be.
I found writing about my beliefs, morals, emotions and desires helped me to define exactly what they are, and how they work together to define who I am. I am a spiritual being in a physical body. I can influence my own destination by identifying my own strengths and weaknesses and accepting them as such.
For me, once the awareness began, it was impossible to stop, as one question always leads to another. I'm grateful, proud and happy of the woman I am today. I'm comfortable in my place within the society because I am comfortable within my own spirit.
It's also very important for me to remember that everyone is on their own journeys, and I need to treat them with the respect of a fellow journeyman. May peace be with you today and always.
