The best part of evolution is seeing the human race grow in mind, spirit and belief. Leave behind those ideas that cause pain and hardship to others. The misconception that marriage should not be available to homosexuals is one of those beliefs. It holds no merit in our present way of life which praises the human race with ideas of freedom and tolerance.
In the past, marriage was an religious affair with the goal of child bearing. Could you ever imagine telling a couple they couldn't marry because they choose not to have children? Probably not. Today, very few still feel that is the reason to marry. We do so now out of love and to vow commitment to our partner. If you believe this to be true, then you should also agree that two men or two women can also marry.
People are said to believe that when homosexuals marry, it devalues their own marriage, is an abomination to the teachings of God and breaks the law which says that marriage should only be between a man and a woman.
Nobody else's choice can truly take away the worth of your own life. It is their only personal situation and separate from yours. The value of your marriage is what you gain from it: shared love and commitment, for example. Somebody else marrying, even if they are a same sex couple, does not mean you love and care for your spouse any less.
Perhaps, according to the bible, it could be an abomination to God. However, the bible says many things that we don't or won't use in reality for various reasons. More people have risen above the belief in God and focused more on doing what they, as a human, believe to be right. Religion has been removed from government affairs, court houses and schools. Should it not also be removed from the legal version of marriage?
The law which says that it is wrong for two people of the same sex to marry is unconstitutional. It is par to all the old laws that gave African Americans and women little to no rights in the past. We grew from those ideas and became better, wiser people because of it. Should we not learn from our mistakes and change that law as we have with others that created inequality amongst us. History is simply repeating us and instead of embracing the change and becoming better people because of our love and tolerance to each other, we criticize them for simply wanting what we all want. Respect.
I think that what really bothers the anti-homosexuals about this debate is that their stereotype of "what" a gay person is is crumbling. They thought homosexuals were all flamboyant swingers who bring nothing but embarrassment and disease. Now they want to get married. That definitely does not fit the profile. For them to want to be married to their love ones simply means the same as it does to heterosexuals. They are human beings who have hearts and dreams and plans and want to settle down with a life partner to share their life with.
How can you possibility deprive any one of that right?
