You've had it. You have finally decided to stop looking at that boring concrete floor, but what can you do? Ceramic tile is a great choice to dress up a concrete floor and to help make any room more attractive.
The first thing to do when laying tile over a concrete floor is to determine the condition of the floor. If the floor is more than slightly un-level you should take the time to level it as much as possible. There are many ways to level a floor, including a liquid that you pour into the area and it fills in the low spots, etc. Any large cracks in the floor should be repaired prior to laying the new tile. Additionally, make sure to clean the floor thoroughly, removing any oils, dusts, and debris. The better the floor is prepared ahead of time, the easier it will be to actually lay the tile and keep it level.
Now that the floor is ready, take a few minutes to plan how to lay out the tiles. Don't be afraid to lay the tiles down to check the spacing and layout. Ideally, you want to start with whole tiles and minimize the number of cuts that you need. When you have the layout that you like, snap a chalk line to give you a guide for the first row.
When you mix your mortar for the tiles, only mix as much as you can use in a short amount of time. It doesn't take the mortar long to start hardening, so it is better to mix less more often. Using your grooved trowel, spread enough mortar for the first couple of tiles. Set your first tile, making sure that it is level and in good contact with the mortar. It is important there there are no voids under the tile, or it could crack when being walked on. If you have a problem with a tile, pull it up, scrape off the mortar and redo it. Take your time and make sure that each tile is placed properly. Using spacers between the tiles ensures that you have consistent space between each tile.
Make sure that you clean the tiles as you go. Use a wet cloth to remove any mortar that you get on the tiles while it's still wet. If you wait until it's dry, you'll have a much harder time getting the tiles clean. You can also check between the tiles for any large amounts of mortar. A small flat-head screw driver makes a handy tool for cleaning out the mortar between the tiles. After the tiles are layed, be sure to stay off of them for about 24 hours to allow the mortar to completely dry.
Once the mortar is dry, you can mix your grout for between the tiles. Follow the manufacturer's directions on for how to mix the grout. After it's mixed, spread the grout in the space between the tiles using a grout float. Using the float, spread the grout on a 45 degree angle to the lines. This will help pack the grout into the seams and ensure consistent coverage. Have a bucket of water and some rags handy. After the grout is in the seams, wipe the extra away with the wet rags. Make sure to change the water frequently to make the cleanup easier.
After the grout is dry, use more wet rags to completely clean the tile. In between cleanings, the tile could take on a hazy or cloudy look. Don't be concerned, it's just the excess grout that still needs cleaned. A few more whipings and the floor should look good.
After again allowing the tiles and grout to completely dry, apply a good sealer to the grout. Sealing the grout will help keep it from getting stained from spills and normal use.
Congratulations, you have just improved the look of your floor. While laying tile is not hard from a technical sense, it is very labor intensive. Remember to just take your time and do not rush yourself. Now sit back and enjoy the fruits of your labor!
