The myth of the perfect discipline strategy for children

children.

Generally, parents do not go around advertising their parenting styles. Whether they adopt a permissive, an authoritarian, or a democratic style, they simply utilize that style to the best of their abilities.

Another thing worth mentioning about parenting styles is that no parent adopts a style and engraves it in stone. This is great because parenting styles should never stifle a parent. Parents should feel free to bounce from one strategy to another at any given time while rearing children because as children grow, their needs, wants, and behaviors change from time to time.

What this means is that if Permissive parents, are incapable of exercising tactics normally employed by Authoritarian parents, or Authoritarian parents find difficulty enacting strategies employed by Democratic types, these parents could find themselves up creeks without paddles - unable to handle particular situations - simply because they lack knowledge of switching hats.

With all this said, parents may not need to concern themselves with the type of disciplinarian they are, nearly as much as concerning themselves with their children's happiness, healthiness, and productiveness unless, their disciplinary styles are ineffective.

A good way to know whether a particular discipline style is working is to access how children respond to the technique. If parents find themselves shouting at their children, repeating the same commands over and over, (may not apply to children in terrible twos) while their children continue to display unacceptable behavior, the parents may need to switch styles.

Sometimes, recognizing a style is not effective may require parents to take time out - to step away from the situation. Ineffective style usage could suggest parents need to regroup and could even indicate a parent needs professional help.

When parents discipline children, they prepare children to discipline themselves. Therefore, it is crucial that parents put forth generous amounts of positive attention, thoughtful patience, and complete understanding. Parents should bear in mind that the better today's children learn to discipline themselves the better prepared they will be to discipline tomorrow's children - parents' grandchildren. It is vital that parents do all they can to help children grow in to productive citizens with an air of independence that will allow them to sufficiently provide for themselves; and be prepared to provide for their future families.
