Understanding the realities and dilemmas of office romances

How many couples do you know that met at work. I took time to think about this, and I realized that more than half of my coupled friends met at some time or another through work. It's not a suprise. We can spend more time at work than at home. It is only natural that a co-worker friendship, with the right chemistry, can become more.

A romantic work relationship can at times seem wonderful. Since you work at the same job, you will always have conversation. You'd be able to see each other often. Have something to look forward to each day you go to work. Sounds great.

It can be at first. However, sometimes as the relationship progresses, and feelings get involved things can turn quite complicated. Seeing a co-worker through the eyes of love can turn an harmless conversation with someone at a water cooler into a cheating cahoots. Jealousy can mistakenly arise, causing friction in the work place. Not only does it affect the two involved in the relationship, but as most of you know, gossip is hot, and alot of times the whole office will know what's going on.

Exactly what an employer doesn't want. Taking away from the tasks at hand. Consider this, most companys refrain from hiring married couples. They have policies against co-workers being romantically involved. It's definately not just because they felt like putting that in there, but studies and surveys have shown that it can cause problems.

The best practice would be if you do get into a relationship at work, look into transfer opportunities to another facility if possible. Perhaps a different company. I think it's best to keep relationships and work separate. Especially if things don't work out, having a bad break up can cause trouble for both.
