People usually uses wood to make walking sticks as wood is cheap and strong to use to support a person's weight and helps in walking. Given some creativity a walking stick can also be used in many ways. Some chinese people I see in coffee shops..they use it to scratch behind their backs where their hands can't reach. If you happen to drop something, like under the drain, that's out of reach, a walking stick would be more than handy.
If I had a broken chair, I'd pull out of my the legs and use it. Or when I see workers cutting
off thick trees at the roadside, I'd take a thick and strong one to use as one. When I'm on hiking, there're so many branches around. A walking stick is handy when you want to play with an insect, or just use it to support yourself when you feel tired.
you can also use: the body of a worn-out bike; leg of table, leg of double-decker bed, a paddle used for canoeing, ..etc many other creative ways you could think up yourself.
use a long and big umbrella, Or clutches.
It's not entirely good to depend on walking stick for walking. Since things are expensive, it'd be good to make your own. If you can't, try to do without it. It's hard to earn money especially when you are old.
