Short stories: Empathy

in the shopping mall.

The strange visitor searched high and low, under benches and in and out of shops. Eventually he sat down to rest a while and ponder his fate if he should not find the nut.

The nut, tossed away by the homeless man, had ended up in a babies pram where the father of the baby had found it and was throwing it up in the air and then catching it to amuse the baby.

As the father threw the nut he wondered what it was like to be his baby son. All of a sudden the nut lit up and the father curled up on the floor with his thumb in his mouth.

The strange visitor found the father and realized that this must have something to do with the nut that he was looking for. He searched the father and the baby and could not find the nut. This is because a child who was passing had seen it on the ground and was now playing with it in the grocers shop.

The child picked up a ripe apple and marveled at its shiny red skin and wondered what it was like to be an apple. The nut lit up in the child's hands as the child puffed out his cheeks and sat as silent as an apple on the grocers floor.

Hot on the trail of the nut the strange visitor found the child but again, the nut was missing.

An elderly woman had picked it up and stuffed it into her apron pocket. She collected many small items which she found in the mall and this was just another item to her. As she pottered about the mall she saw a poster of Betty Boop and wondered what it would be like to be Betty.

The next thing that she knew she was skipping about the mall singing 'be boopy doop'.

This time, when the strange visitor found the elderly lady he was determined to also find the nut. Unfortunately the nut was missing from her apron pocket so the strange visitor just had to keep on searching.

Now occasionally you may find people who act in a peculiar manner. This may not be their fault as they may have come into contact with the nut. Others may even describe the odd actions of the person in question as being 'nutty' or even call them a 'nut job'. This is not an inflammatory statement as it might just be true.
