Understanding the realities and dilemmas of office romances

An office romance can be the best or the worst thing that can happen to those who work within the same office. Yes, that's true even if those two lovers are not working within the same department of the company. As a matter of fact, most corporations that I am aware of prohibit employees from dating fellow employees. Some of them even prohibit married couples from working within the same company.

The truth is, employers want their employees to concentrate on the work assigned, and nothing else that does not pertain to the job at hand. They even frown upon employees who have family problems that cause those employees to be less then good at their jobs. Time lost do to a family illness is also frowned upon, even if your loved one does not work for the same company.

Well, something is clearly wrong if your employer demands 100% of your time and your loyalty. That is also a reason why an office romance begins. You see, the employee spends so much of the time each day working that there is not much time for finding love relationships outside of the work environment. Clearly, all of those beautiful people of the opposite sex prove to be a greater temptation for the truly hard working but lonely person.

Like it or not, a broken romance is bad enough and when that happens in the office many other terrible things do happen thereafter. Your lost love is now dating your boss and maybe wants your job. Then again, you still love that person and the guy you hate is now getting all of her affection. Yes, that works both ways and your ended romance could put you in her situation.

Well, that's the bad part of this story. Then again, if the love-birds get married, it now is difficult to hide the relationship. The Federal income tax regulations are one thing that must be complied with. A name and status change must be reported and your secret is now known to your employer. Guess what, one of you will most likely be fired. Will your partner still be as much in love with you after that happens? Recently married people almost always need more money for the house they want to buy, etc..

Yes, even the good part about having an office romance really is not that good in the long run. The divorce rate is sky high, and you, Dear Reader, could find yourself out of a job and homeless at the same time. My motto has been in the past and always will be: "Never get your meat where you get your potatoes."
