We are so used to ineffective leadership, whether it be from our religious ministers or our politicians, that we could not recognize Biblical leadership at all, or we wouldn't accept the current form of our leaders. In fact, the world would be a far better place if all our religious and secular leaders stood down and followed the Biblical pattern.
The Son of God is our prime example. He did not attain to become the head of the church in his day. He did not hang out with the leading Pharisees or Sadducee's. He did not buy himself the best house or the best car. He did not wear only the best clothes. He did not try to make himself rich. He did not seek popularity or recognition.
All of those examples are the mark of the so-called leaders of the world today whether they be secular or religious. It should make you wonder what they think they're doing. It should also make you wonder why we allow them to get away with it.
As the Son himself said, "You know that the rulers of the Gentiles lord it over them, and those who are great exercise authority over them.' (Matthew 20:25)
He went on to say, "Yet it shall not be so among you; but whoever desires to become great among you, let him be your servant. And whoever desires to be first among you, let him be your slave. Just as the Son of Man did not come to be served, but to serve, and to give his life a ransom for many."
What does this have to do with leadership today, you might ask. Everything! God created man for a purpose. He did not create us to be in second-place behind big business, profits, laws, economics, or anything else you can name!
People matter! People should come first and foremost in each and every consideration that we make! Each of us is our brother's keeper we are responsible to God to ensure that our love for ourselves is echoed in each decision we make that could affect the next person or the person beyond that one.
If everyone took this duty seriously, we would not have a single person thinking, doing, making, marketing, or selling anything that in any way could harm their neighbor. This is the ripple or butterfly effect of, not leading, but of serving others.
This is what I would call Biblical and effective leadership!
