WARNING - THIS WILL BE DIFFICULT.
Dealing with prejudice is very delicate even for an adult because this ugly reality rears its head in almost every aspect of our lives; and in even the simplest things we do or do not do. Indeed, almost everyone can attest to have been a victim of prejudice at some point in their lives on the basis of race, gender, religious affiliation, financial circumstances, physical appearance, intellectual achievement, physical handicap, political affiliation; and just about anything!
Once you show preferential treatment to someone based on subjective criteria, prejudice has taken place! How then do we teach our children how to handle prejudice when we ourselves (adults, that is) are grappling with it everyday?
The only way to teach our children is to live by example. This may require us making conscious efforts to drive the lesson home. We should start at home by showing 'equal' affection to all our children. Yes! prejudice is also present in the home!
Teach your children EARLY ON to respect all human beings irrespective of their peculiar circumstances and attributes by doing the same. They should not think themselves better than others or vice versa on purely subjective criteria. Once you notice any semblance of 'prejudice' in their speech or action, call them to order. A good way to do this is to ask your child how they would feel in the reverse position.
There is no need for paranoia - showing prejudice is different from having preferences. However, it is better to be safe than sorry.
