people able men such as fear God, men of truth, hating covetousness and place such over them to be rulers of thousands, rulers of hundreds, rulers of fifties and rulers of tens. And let them judge the people at all times. Then it shall be that every great matter they will bring to you, but every small matter they themselves shall judge. So it will be easier for you, for they will bear the burden with you." Moses was burning out because he was bearing the burden of leadership alone. Jethro's sound advice was the share the burden by gathering around him team that could help Moses lead.
Jethro's leadership plan had six parts to it. Part number one was that Moses was to stand before God on behalf of the people. It was intercession. Priority number one for Moses and his leadership was prayer. Secondly Moses was to teach those he was leading the statues and the laws of God. Teaching is a important part of leadership. Thirdly Moses was to show those he was leading how to walk. He was to be a model of what he said and taught. He was to be an example to his people. Fourthly Moses was to select people who could bear some of his burden as he governed the people. As a good leader Moses had to delegate duties out to others. A good leader is one who knows how to delegate things to others. Fifthly Moses had to depend on his team .An effective leader trusts those he has working for him. Leaders know their team and they trust their team .
We have considered some leadership principles from the Old Testament. The New Testament also has some important teaching about leadership. The Book of Acts has powerful leadership principles from which any spiritual leader can benefit. If a spiritual leader follows these principles modeled in Acts their ministry will be marked by increased power and effectiveness.
In the Book of Acts we see that prayer plays a central role in leadership. (Acts 4: 24-31). Acts 6:1-6 shows that leaders share the work, they do not do what others can and should be doing. Leaders submit to the leading of the Holy Spirit. (Acts 13:1-3). Leaders do not seek the glory for themselves. They are careful to give the praise to the Lord.(Acts 14:14-18). Leaders train others (Acts 16:1-5). Leaders assure that they are teaching the whole counsel of God. ( Acts 20:37).
In conclusion God calls people to leadership. The best textbook on leadership is the Bible. May God help us to do as it directs us to.
