The Bible is filled with many lessons on leadership. Reams could be written about Adam,Abraham, Isaac, Joseph, Nehemiah, Isaiah and Jeremiah, Daniel and a host of others. In the eyes of God spiritual leadership is a sacred trust. How Christian leaders conduct themselves impacts far more than their own lives. This why they will be more severely judged. James 3:1 says " My brethren let not many of you become teachers, knowing that we shall receive a stricter judgment." Also, godly leadership should grow and become stronger through its transmission to subsequent generations. God calls His leaders to realize that the work to which they are called is His and He will see to its completion. The faithful spiritual leader is faithful to instruct God's people in God's Word making sure they know it and are careful to obey it.God honors those who speak only this message.
The Biblical model for leaders is that of "the servant leader".The servant leader does not boss, dominate or dictate to God's people. He "goes before them: to lead them. He is humble, open minded, and soft spoken and supportive.
Two Old Testament examples of spiritual leadership were Nehemiah and Moses's Father in Law, Jethro. Nehemiah was appointed overseer in Israel and undertook the rebuilding of the wall of the City of Jerusalem.. He lead by example as he worked diligently . He was God's man for the hour. What was the characteristics of Nehemiah's life that made him an effective leader? I believe Nehemiah was marked by three things that made him an effective leader:
1. Nehemiah was a man of prayer. ( Nehemiah 1:5-11)
2. Nehemiah had a plan which He fulfilled(Nehemiah 2L4-9,11-18.
3. Nehemiah performed what He set out to do . (Nehemiah 6:15)
A very important part of spiritual leadership is the commitment the leader has to praying ,planning and performing. Nehemiah was a successful leader because He prayed, he planned and then He performed. So it is with real leadership today. The leader must be a person of prayer, and must have a plan and must work the plan.
Jethro, the Father in law of Moses, laid down for his son in law, and all of us some sound leadership principles in Exodus 18. 19-22. " Listen now to my voice; I will give you counsel, and God will be with you. Stand before God for the people, so that you may bring the difficulties to God. And you shall teach them the statutes and the laws, and show them the way in which they must walk , and the work they must do. Moreover you shall select from all the
