Teaching kids time management

Kids have no sense of time. They want to do whatever, whenever they please. They do not care if they have an appointment to go to, and they could care less if they were watching television for four hours straight. It can be a difficult thing to teach to your children, but it is one of the most important to do so. They all go through the phase that they should be able to do whatever they want, when they want. Trust me, it is something that they will grow out of, you just have to be persistant with them and they will get into a schedule.

It's all about teaching your children some responsibility. It is hard to teach them this when they are really young, but it is important to show them this from a young age, just on a smaller scale. Limiting their time with certain activities is the first step to learning time management. They need to know that they just cannot sit on the couch all day and watch television. We got careless with my daughter and shortly after that she thought she owned the T.V. and could watch it all day long. We had to put that to an end right away.

Make sure your child has some kind of schedule that they stick to. They need to know time limits and get used to doing certain activities during the day. For instance, they need to know in the morning they need to get dressed, and eat breakfast. Simple activities like this will get them used to a schedule. I had a hard time teaching my daughter to do simple activities but once I got in the habit and constantly reminded her, she finally caught on.

Television time can be the hardest for a kid to learn. They see us, as parents, coming home from work and sitting in front of the television after dinner. We are exhausted from a hard day's work and all we want to do is relax. This is the worst thing we can do because we are setting a bad example for our children. It's all about teaching children to be on a schedule which will make them more responsible.

Set certain times of the day for your children to watch television. Maybe watch an hour of television after school and maybe a show after their homework is done. Let them know when it is ok to watch television and when it is not. If you set a good example and maybe not watch as much TV yourself and set more time aside for family activities. Let them choose a favorite show that they watch every week and stick to it.

Setting basic rules for around the home and a basic schedule for the family will teach your children time management. Setting goals will also help them succeed. Starting with small goals is important because you do not want to overwhelm them. If you start small, you will have something to grow on. It's all about being persistant with your child, they will eventually catch on.
