As long as there are sports, there will always be a need for people with education in sports medicine. Whether it'd be the excitement of working in sports or a simple interest in athletics, many students are now choosing to study sports medicine in college. Unless your college has a specific degree plan for sports medicine, there are some common basic courses that would be a good idea to take if you are planning to pursue this path.
Usually, the more health and science classes you take, the better your preparation will be. Basic courses would be anatomy and physiology, and biology. It is important to learn and understand how the human body works, especially under the strains that sports can place on the body. If athlete's bodies worked the same as the average person, they wouldn't have shows on television analyzing how it is that they can jump higher or run faster. Athletes are able to almost retrain how their bodies work and it's a starting point for getting into the sport medicine field. This would also lead into any biomechanics courses that your college may offer. This will help you learn how muslces and joints work.
Taking a nutrition course would also help out in your path. You would be able to recommend better and healthier ways of eating to your athletes depending upon what sport they are in. You can help a football player gain muscle, or a runner stay trim. Any physical therapy courses would be a huge help as you can then gain the knowledge how to rehabilitate any injuries athletes.
If possible, volunteer or intern with a sports department in your college. Nothing can substitute for on the job training and seeing what really goes on in sports medicine. But if you really get lost, you can always speak to an advisor or go directly to coaches and current trainers and get advice from them.
