Minor furniture repair and cleaning tips: Emergency scratch cover for dark wood furniture

With two cats, a toddler, and a husband, furniture scratches happen. I'm so lucky to have grown up with a dad who owned a furniture store and was a carpenter. I easily become Mrs. Fix-It around the house, especially when it comes to touching up the furniture.

Most recently, I had some oak shelves to put on the wall. The problem with them was they were stained dark, and had screw holes in them that needed to be filled. I went to the nearest hardware store, and purchased Minwax's Blend Fil Pencil. Quickly, I was able to fill in those holes with the pencil, and the shelves looked so much better. Only upon getting up close to them would one be able to see the spots I filled in. While I was in touching up mode, I also filled in some deep scratches on my kitchen table. That little pencil works like a charm!

Minwax also sells wood putty, wood filler, and wood finish stain markers that you can use to fill the scratches or use for other minor repairs. I've personally used the pencils and markers over the years very successfully. These are inexpensive ways to make repairs yourself without paying to refinish your furniture.

Another great product I've come across to take the white out of furniture scratches is the Tibet Almond Stick Furniture Scratch Remover. You just rub it over the scratch, and the damaged area is less noticeable.

And, of course, if all else fails, just throw a doily or a tablecloth over the scratch! No one will be the wiser.
