Kissing up to your boss is a must if you want to get ahead . . . yeah, I have hear this before. Truth is that I have NEVER kissed up to a boss and I NEVER got ahead - primarily because I understand the fact that it is impossible to "get ahead" by working for someone else. The only way to be top dog is to work for yourself because, lets face it, by working for someone else you are only helping them achieve their goals and dreams, not yours. It has been 2 years now since I have stopped working for someone else and began my own business and I haven't looked back. I am not saying that it has been all lollipops and sunshine but it sure beats dealing with stuffy bosses and office politics.
Think of it this way: those of you that have actually kissed up to a boss to get ahead . . . how long did the afterglow last? Probably long enough to realize who's rump you have to stick your nose in next. When working in the corporate world - or for anyone but yourself - there is always someone above you. If there is no one else above you, then you must be the owner of the company, thus reinforcing my point.
I am harder on myself than anyone else could possibly be - especially a boss. Therefore, what would be the point to kissing up? It has been my experience that some employees routinely suck up as a matter of habit. Perhaps its just their personality, however, more likely they are just searching for definition and affirmation because, historically, it was lacking. I have no beef with striving to excel - matter of fact, this article is about celebrating excellence, not mediocrity. This is why I cannot understand why those which achieve excellence as habit, become so complacent in their chosen profession as to feel the only way ahead is through the bottom end of the person in front of you. Its what I call the line of elephants mentality - everyone traveling nose-to-tail. I don't know about you, but that is a line I want to be the head of!
