Some people just write and others write reasonably well. We then also have the writers who are extremely prolific. What makes the difference? How do we become successful as Feature Writers? In my experience I have found that we must have four main qualifications and thus incorporate them well.
1) We must learn the ability to project a topic that is magnetic, and thus draws the reader's interest. In doing this we must show expertise in the fields of writing to cater to the general audience. Yet write well enough to have the reader choose or writes over others on offer. Thus we must offer something a little more than other authors do. We need to basically "feed" the reader and whet their appetite for more.
2) The author needs to generate topics that others can relate to, such as romance, infidelity, hate, grief, passion, rage and so forth. While doing this, we must be capable of presenting them with vivid images that set the scene realistically. Thus place the reader within the depth of the scene.
3) A good feature writer must show a level of compassion as well as a good understanding of the subject they write. Thus they must have a sound knowledge of the basics of the topic. Use good sources to enhance the write, as well as have it sound exiting and worth knowing, yet add that element of shock when it is needed.
4) Know who you wish to appeal to, and thus write for that particular age genre and so forth.
5) Have accuracy in facts that are within your featured article.
6) Have the ability to attract an audience and thus play into their hands with your word skills. Therefore be capable of explaining exactly what you mean, accurately and without overkill.
7) Research what appeals to your readers the most, and attempt to present stories which cater for this.
8) Have what many deem as a nose for news, find it, research it and then elaborate on this.
9) Recognize a good subject when you see it or hear it. Thus open your eyes to the world around you, and be prepared to make use of whatever is at hand, that is exciting, exhilarating, disturbing or simply out of this world!
10) Attempt to see how these subjects will be accepted by your readers.
