Define failure... There are a lot of things a person, even a kid or a teen, can fail at. Some may fail to get all A's on their report card, or can't keep their first job, or don't make the important basket on the final game of the basketball season. But this does not mean they are a failure, especially if they try to build there way up to success. When they try to ace the tests, practice regularly for games, and show up everyday on time at work they can be nothing further from a failure. Even if they miss that basket or get a low grade for the quarter if they keep truly trying then they cannot -truly- be defined as a failure.
But a child does not realize this when their parents constantly tell them they're a 'failure', worthless, aren't smart enough for college, or don't do good enough. Even the most irresponsible of children should not be yelled at that they fail miserably. No child should be told they are a failure. For most young adults those kind of words and remarks will effect them and eventually they will think themselves a failure and nothing more. It alters their state of mind. The naturally pretty see themselves ugly. The smart believe they are stupid. Those capable of changing people's lives for the better, even the world, are told they are (and ultimately become in their eyes) worthless.
When the people you love and want to please most call you a failure and worthless you are brain washed to believe that is what you are. Not all are convinced of this, but more than not become what their parents see them as. So few fight the accusations and try to prove they aren't failures. Those that do don't always get anywhere with their parents; but they can at least prove to themselves they are worth more then their family believes.
In the end, though, when a parent labels their child as a failure it crushes their spirit, sometimes for life.
