Short stories: Religion

Sunday. She sat there at the front of the church with tears streaming down her face. She felt as if a weight had been lifted off her shoulders, but she still did not have a clue what she was about to face.

She returned home Sunday evening. He was not there. He had not even bothered to try to find out where she was. She went to bed seething.

Monday morning came and it was time to go back to work. He still was not at home. She went to work extremely upset with him. She decided to call him at his office; surely he would be there. She got his voice mail. She called his mother and other members of his family to see if they had heard from him. No one had talked to him or seen him since Saturday night. All of a sudden that feeling of heaviness returned. She tried to work, but soon realized that work was out of the question until her questions could be answered. She desperately needed to find out where he was and what was going on. She called around and finally found out from one of his friends that she needed to call the hospital. Her heart fell and at that moment she knew that something was terribly wrong. She called the hospital. They told her that someone that had been brought there Sunday afternoon that fit his description. She could not say definitely who he was because he did not have any identification on him (he had a bad habit of leaving his wallet in the car whenever he played basketball). However, she was sorry to report that person had died and had been taken to the county morgue!

That heavy heart feeling really dug into her then. She gathered all the strength she could muster as she dialed the number for the county morgue. She gave the person who answered the phone his name and a description of him. On the other end of the phone was dead silence. "Hold on one moment please". The medical examiner returned on the other end of the line. "I am so sorry, we just learned his identify. It is indeed your husband. He lost consciousness after a basketball game on Sunday and never came to. He was taken to the hospital that afternoon. They did everything they could for him, but he did not make it. He lost consciousness at 1:40 p.m."!

This was exactly the same time she gave her life to God! The Lord looks definitely out for his own and He does not place any more on us than we can bear. He was with her that entire weekend, brought her unto Him, and walked with her as she learned her husband's fate. God knew what was happening and at the exact time her husband lost his life, God brought her into a personal relationship with Him. Just as He promised, He will never leave us or forsake us. He will be with us always, even to the end of the age.
