side that hampered their success last season. A side built on a reliably strong defence, Valencia have been culpable for leaking goals and the matter has subsequently been addressed with free transfer signing Ivan Helguera to accompany the likes of Raul Abliol and long servant Carlos Marchena. Valencia will again look to the diminutive and insipid movements of young striker David Villa who will again spearhead the attack with Fernando Morientes and new signing Nikola Zigic. Stephen Sunday or Sunny' as he his more commonly know looks a decent prospect to cast an eye on this season, while young Portuguese central midfielder Manuel Fernandes was snatched under the noses of Everton could prove an inspired signing. Valencia will expect to be pushing again the pressure on the top two or three clubs ready to pounce on any significant loss of form as their mainstay into the title race.
Atletico Madrid Javier Aguirre's presence at the less successful of the two Madrid clubs is one that hails great promise for the club where potential has long yet been justified. Finishing seventh in the league last season will have been regarded a disappointment having occupied the Champions League spots for much of the season ultimately cost them their prized asset, Fernando Torres. It is a club that has always had significant funds at its disposal and this year is no different with the arrivals of Diego Forlan, Simao Sabrosa, Thiago Motta, Luis Garcia and Jose Antonio Reyes. While many would draw envy at the talent in midfield and forward areas, the defensive spine does not convince enough to suggest they will not again be breached in the fashion that they were last season, and it will be their performances in the early part of last season that will see them in contention for the La Liga crown again this year.
